Hotel Elite Status Tiers Decoded: Which Benefits Matter by Trip Type

Late checkout, breakfast, upgrades and lounge access: value each status benefit for your business, family or resort trips and decide which tier is worth it.

Updated

Hotel status benefits sound similar from program to program, but they aren’t equally valuable, and they aren’t equally reliable. This guide sorts benefits by how certain they are, values them for your kind of trip, and helps you decide which tier is enough.

The numbers in the worked example are illustrative.

Step 1: Sort benefits into guaranteed, likely and discretionary

Read the program’s official wording carefully:

Count guaranteed benefits at full value, likely benefits at a discount, and discretionary benefits at a small value or zero.

Step 2: Match benefits to your trip type

A benefit that’s essential on one kind of trip can be worthless on another.

Step 3: Put a cash value on each benefit

Value each at what you’d otherwise pay, or at nothing if you wouldn’t pay:

Step 4: Compare with the cost of qualifying

If you’ll reach a tier anyway through work travel, the cost is zero. If you’d need extra stays, or more expensive hotels, count the extra cost.

Which tier is enough

A worked example. A family takes four hotel trips a year, five nights each.

Benefit Mid tier Top tier
Breakfast for four not included $40 a day × 20 days = $800
Late checkout some stays: $60 most stays: $120
Upgrades rarely: $40 sometimes: $200
Total $100 $1,120

If the family would reach top tier through their normal stays, it’s clearly worth having. If they’d need 20 extra paid nights, it almost certainly isn’t.
